Herrenknecht developed a new machine technology –the Boxhole Boring Machine (BBM) – to construct shafts in mines based on the proven pipe jacking method used in Microtunnelling. The BBM has been developed for fast and safe construction of vertical and inclined shafts (± 30° from vertical) with a diameter of up to 1.5 meters.
The Shaft Boring Roadheader (SBR) was developed for the mechanized sinking of blind shafts in soft to medium-hard rock. Its roadheader boom and rotating cutting drum allow the cutting of variable shaft diameters from 8 to 12 meters. The new development offers higher occupational safety and high shaft sinking performances.
The Raise Boring Rig (RBR) is used for excavating shafts up to depths >1,000 m. After completing the pilot drill from surface, the pilot drill bit is replaced by a reamer to enlarge the shaft to the foreseen diameter. In addition to deep mine extraction shafts, ventilation shafts, supply shafts and pressure shafts for hydropower stations are produced using raise drills.
